A provincial court judge will swear Burnaby’s new mayor and council into office at a ceremony Monday evening.

Mike Hurley will assume the city’s top job alongside eight councillors –  seven returning (Pietro Calendino, Sav Dhaliwal, Dan Johnston, Colleen Jordan, Paul McDonell, Nick Volkow and James Wang) and newcomer Joe Keithley of the Green Party.

Judge Joanne Challenger will swear all nine council members into office beginning at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown Hotel’s Crystal Ballroom.

The swearing-in will be followed by appointments to the Metro Vancouver board.

Hurley and Keithley will be assuming public office for the first time. They both campaigned on promises to bring change to City Hall but will need to work with seven Burnaby Citizens Association incumbents to get anything done.

The ceremony will be followed by a reception with refreshments.
