Norine Shim has been named the B.C. Green Party candidate in the Burnaby North riding for the upcoming provincial election.

In a Twitter video, which was retweeted by the party, Shim said she received an “outpouring of love and support” that “just blew me away” after her candidacy announcement was made over the weekend.

“I was hesitant to run because I’m not a politician. I come from humble means. I don’t have politician friends. I don’t have donors with deep pockets,” she said in the video. “I’m running because I realized I don’t want a lifelong politician to be speaking for me. I wanted somebody who could actually understand what my life looked like on a day-to-day basis.”

Shim will be running against incumbent B.C. NDP MLA Janet Routledge, who has held the riding since the 2017 election. Prior to that election, Burnaby North had been held by B.C. Liberal MLA Richard Less since 2001, when that party swept to power.

The Liberal candidate for the riding is cardiologist and Vancouver Academy of Music chair Dr. Raymond Dong.

The deadline for parties to confirm candidates is Friday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. No other Burnaby-area candidates have been named for the Greens as of noon Monday.

The vote is set for Oct. 24, a year before it would have occurred without the early election call by the NDP.
