Opinion: If your Burnaby vehicle is dangerous junk, do us a favour and take transit

Burnaby drivers have two basic rules to follow.

One, drive according to the local and provincial traffic laws. And two, make sure your vehicle is in safe working condition. If you can't afford to fix your vehicle, then take transit.

Burnaby RCMP handed out a whopping 73 violation tickets in just four days last week during a traffic sweep.

Out of those 73 tickets were violations for dangerous driving habits and defective vehicles.

This included 14 more vehicles being taken off the road because those vehicles were deemed "unsafe" to be driven.

These new violations followed the Burnaby RCMP’s traffic enforcement unit stopping what could be the worst truck ever.

Police stopped a truck on a Burnaby road and found a whopping eight separate violations.

They included an unsecured load of dangerous goods, unsecure cargo and a compromised front tire.

In all, the driver was given violation tickets that added up to $1,420 and the vehicle was impounded.

Yikes. Talk about reckless. But it’s par for the course when it comes to commercial vehicles.

Last week, in just three days, Burnaby traffic officers inspected 24 vehicles.

Out of those 24 commercial vehicles, they found a whopping 61 violations and impounded 16 of the vehicles.

That’s way more than half of the vehicles inspected were found to be unsafe to be on Burnaby roads.

Const. Kevin Connolly told the NOW last year that commercial vehicles often fail their inspections.

“Commercial vehicles are one of the highest-violating types that are on the road,” said Connolly, who works in the Burnaby RCMP’s traffic enforcement unit. “When you consider how big commercial vehicles are and the potential for damage, it’s concerning.”
