Burnaby now has two of its MLAs serving as cabinet ministers.

Burnaby-Deer Lake MLA Anne Kang was named the new minister of Citizens’ Services as Premier John Horgan announced a minor cabinet shuffle Wednesday morning.

“Kang will connect more rural, remote and Indigenous communities with high-speed internet, creating jobs and opportunities for people and businesses,” said a statement on the Province of B.C. website. “Kang will continue the work to modernize government procurement, so that more local, small and medium-sized companies can do business with government more efficiently.”

Kang joins Burnaby-Lougheed MLA Katrina Chen in the cabinet ranks. Chen is the minister of State for Child Care.

Kang was elected as the MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake in 2017 and previously served as the Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors and Multiculturalism. She immigrated to British Columbia as a child, and has lived in Burnaby for over 30 years. She has been an active community volunteer since the age of 8. Kang was a three-term Burnaby City Councillor before becoming an MLA.

In other cabinet shuffle moves, Michelle Mungall has been appointed as minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Competitiveness, formerly the Ministry of Jobs, Trade and Technology.

Bruce Ralston has been appointed minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources.
