Hundreds rallied outside the NEB hearing in Burnaby this past Saturday, but not without a little street hockey action first.
The rally, organized by ForestEthics, featured a game of pre-protest ball hockey put on by the Dogwood Initiative. The game’s theme was the people of B.C. versus the NEB.
“It’s a rigged game and we need a ref on the ice, and we thought it was a fun way to show what it’s been like for the intervenors that have been trying to stand up for their communities at the National Energy Board,” said Kai Nagata, spokesperson for Dogwood.
The rally also drew members of Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion (BROKE), First Nations representatives, the Wilderness Committee and student activists. Burnaby city councillor Sav Dhaliwal was among the speakers.
While the rally continued outside, three women were arrested at a sit-in protesting the fact the public is not allowed to watch the hearings at the Delta Burnaby Hotel and Conference Centre.
