Re: Reporter reveals one of her favorite sources, Here and Now, Burnaby NOW, Dec. 21.
If I had a wish this Christmas, it would be that we had the same reporter desire to find local sources for information here in the northwest. It's very frustrating to be a commercial salmon fisher (37 years) and have no media seeking out sources for information regarding the facts and not simply the opinion of some self-interest group picking and choosing which issue is important to their agenda and not to others' concerns, which are equally egregious.
The Fraser River has had more than its share of media attention, likely explained by the vast numbers of urbanites in the Lower Mainland who command considerable voter sway, but the issues facing the Fraser salmon stocks are no more egregious than those constantly coming at our north coast salmon stocks.
If we looked back to the 1970s, when the Nass, Skeena, Smiths and Rivers Inlet sockeye would have totaled up to anything the Fraser could put out compared to today, when none of them has any measure of certainty sufficient to warrant not being included in the overall salmon concern, how do I inspire the "media," without selecting which ones to not bother with, to include our issues, failures and successes, given all B.C. salmon stocks are no less important than another?
