Are today's teachers underworked and underperforming?

Dear Editor

Re: The changing face of a Burnaby school, Sept. 30.

I note from the two photos you published that the 1956 Grade 1 class had 41 students and one teacher, while the 2015 class has 20 students and two teachers.

So the ratio of students to teachers was 41 to 1 then and 10 to 1 now.

I don’t know what conclusion to draw from this.  Are modern teaching methods that much better or are our teachers underworked and underperforming?  Are we getting value for our money from our education system or not?

My grade school classes were all in the 40-plus range, and I managed to turn out OK, or at least some people think so.
