Dear Editor:

Two letters published by the Burnaby NOW (Online poster proud of partaking in violent gay bashing attack, July 22; Group in a time warp, July 20) have raised the level of attack against parents who request accommodation for their child's freedom of conscience and religion to extreme levels.

One letter writer implicitly links Charter Lau, a parent involved in the Parents' Voice movement, to the violent comments placed by an unknown individual on an internet discussion board.

This letter writer goes on to state that Mr. Lau is in favour of bullying children.

A second letter draws links between these parents and the violent crimes committed during the racial wars in the US South during the '50s. Parents who have repeatedly affirmed the need to protect all children from bullying, and who are concerned that the freedom of children to follow their moral and religious convictions is being violated by policies implemented by the Burnaby school board, are inexplicably being publicly tried and found guilty of crimes committed by unknown individuals and by individuals who were committing crimes before these parents were even born.

These letters demonstrate that children with moral and religious convictions are in as much need of protection against bullying in the Burnaby public school system as are other vulnerable children.
