An unclaimed $24-million lottery ticket is floating around and it’s freaking me out

Oh boy, here we go again.

I got anxiety last year when a mega-jackpot lottery ticket had gone unclaimed for an extended period of time. It was eventually claimed, but it kept me awake at night wondering if someone had lost the ticket. BCLC had to issue a news release to request people check their tickets just in case.

Now, someone who purchased a ticket in Aldergrove for the Lotto 6/49 draw on May 27, 2020is waking up considerably richer after winning the jaw-dropping, $24-million jackpot.

At least, let’s hope they wake up and check their numbers. I keep worrying that this person has put the ticket in a drawer or a box, or left it in a shopping bag that’s been filled with garbage and tossed out.

These are the things that keep my OCD mind awake at night.

The ticket was the only one in Canada to match all six numbers — 7, 17, 18, 22, 28 and 34.

B.C.’s previous Lotto 6/49 jackpot winner was Tibor Tusnady, who won $16 million in the April 15, 2020 draw. Tusnady claimed his life-changing prize through BCLC’s alternate prize-claim process.

BCLC will announce the specific retail location in Aldergrove that sold the $24 million winning ticket, once the winner comes forward to claim the prize.

That is if they come forward to claim the prize.

Some lottery winners wait before claiming the prize because they want to consult financial professionals.

Other lottery winners brace for all of the publicity and the sudden calls from relatives they haven’t heard from in years wanting to discuss their “can’t-miss” investment opportunities.

It’s a lot to take in for people.

All lottery winners have 52 weeks from the draw date printed on their ticket to come forward to claim their prize.

In 2019, B.C. lottery players redeemed more than $85 million in prize-winning Lotto 6/49 tickets. Anyone can win, and #YouCouldBeNext! Watch some amazing lottery winner stories online.
