Burnaby NOW reader and local photographer John Preissl sent in this haunting photo of a heron chick.

The photo was taken of the rookery at Deer Lake.

“The herons are getting close to fledge time and spreading their wings,” Preissl said. “It is quite disturbing to see the chicks fall out of the nests from 50-100 feet and hit the forest floor. Some do not make it due to the fall or predators. We have seen many broken and hatched out eggs on the sidewalk and grass below the nests.”
Preissl said this rookery started 5 - 6 years ago.

The City of Burnaby has a warning posted to not disturb this nature area. People are asked to report violations by calling 604-294-7200.
