As if there weren’t enough gambling options in this province, BC Lottery Corporation wants you to place bets on babies being born.

BCLC just sent out a news release saying that B.C. bettors can now wager on the first baby born in 2019 as part of PlayNow.com’s newest novelty bet.

“From Northern B.C. to Vancouver Island, the Okanagan and beyond, 24 hospitals across the province are included in the list of betting options, although players also have the opportunity to pick ‘any other hospital’ not included on the list,” says a news release. “Currently, B.C. Women’s Hospital in Vancouver is favoured to welcome the first baby of the New Year with odds of 5/1, followed closely by Surrey Memorial Hospital with odds of 6/1. That means there is a 17 and 14 per cent chance, respectively, that 2019’s first bundle of joy is born at one of these two Lower Mainland locations.

“For the past two years, B.C.’s first baby of the New Year entered the world in the Lower Mainland. Will that trend continue?”

This is all just nauseating. As if all the money laundering wasn’t enough, BCLC wants people to bet on something that is sacred – the birth of a child.

Oh, they made sure to say in the news that they offer “socially responsible gambling entertainment.”

Sorry, but I’ve seen too much destruction wrought due to gambling addictions. This isn’t fun.

It’s just sad.
