Look for fresh B.C. blueberries to jazz up Burnaby menus all summer

One of best parts of living on the West Coast is eating. Yeah, I know people think it’s the weather – because it doesn’t snow much and doesn’t hit -50C - but for me it’s just the eating. As in fresh West Coast-grown food.

One of best parts of living on the West Coast is eating.

Yeah, I know people think it’s the weather – because it doesn’t snow much and doesn’t hit -50C - but for me it’s just the eating.

As in fresh West Coast-grown food.

More and more restaurants have realized that investing in fresh food will attract more diners than serving up stale or frozen products shipped from some far-off place.

And things really heat up during the summer when Chilliwack corn arrives, along with locally grown strawberries, blueberries and more.

The B.C. government helps encourage eateries to shop local through its Buy BC program.

One example is a recent partnership between the Minister of Agriculture and White Spot restaurants – with the chain receiving Buy BC funding.

“At White Spot, buying local is not a new idea — it’s the way the company has done business ever since Nat Bailey first opened its doors in 1928,” said Minister of Agriculture Lana Popham, in a news release. “White Spot continues to do so much to showcase BC agriculture. From cabbage and mushrooms to tomatoes and potatoes, the list is long and delicious, and from now until September you can add blueberries to that list.”

White Spot will dedicate its share of the Buy BC partnership program funds toward enhancing their groundbreaking in-house Red Seal Chef training program. Red Seal graduates will have the opportunity to further bolster their training by visiting farms, fields and pastures around the province to forge personal connections with the people who provide local products to White Spot and Triple O’s locations on a daily basis.

White Spot also unveiled its seasonal blueberry menu featuring B.C.-grown blueberries in everything from milkshakes to pies to boozy drinks.
