I’m feeling stunned right now and a little emotional because of an incredible act of generosity during a crisis.

Burnaby restaurants are struggling mightily right now, with some likely to close forever due to COVID-19.

And yet, Desi Turka Indian Cuisine on Sixth Street in Burnaby is still finding a way to give back to people who are struggling financially.

Deepak Khanchi, director Desi Turka Indian Cuisine, outlined its program to give away free groceries and food tiffins (tasty food combos that include curry) to those in need.

“As they may have lost their jobs or especially international students who are having hard time financially,” said Khanchi. “We are also giving free tiffin combo for people who cannot pay.”

Desi is able to do this by teaming up with donors, including the Canadian Hindu Foundation.

I wouldn’t begrudge any restaurant owners for only thinking of themselves right now, but for one to go this extra step is truly amazing.
