Burnaby cops nail construction zone maniacs in sweep

Flaggers are the unsung heroes of the working world.

They keep traffic moving at construction sites that slow our daily commutes, especially during the busy summer season of road projects.

And what do they get in return?

Grief, mostly, with middle fingers and foul language. In some cases, flaggers are run down by drivers too angry or too stupid to understand the rules of the road.

Yeah, I said stupid because there are too many drivers who don’t understand that the speed limit in a construction zone is 30 km/h.

To prove my point, the Burnaby RCMP’s traffic department was out in force at Broadway and Gaglardi Way – the site of work on the FortisBC project upgrading gas lines.

In just a short time, the traffic officers handed out 21 tickets – with the average violator driving more than twice the speed limit, according to a tweet from the department's official account.

It’s ridiculous. When you see the reflective clothing and the orange cones you have to slow it down. People’s lives are at stake.
