Burnaby Mountain commuters to breathe easier as road closure finally ends

With one road closed, the only other way to SFU became a crowded detour. NOW FILES

The nightmare is over.

OK, that’s an exaggeration, but the traffic situation at the Burnaby campus of Simon Fraser University has been pretty terrible for the past few weeks.

A collapsed culvert that was threatening a fish-bearing stream caused an emergency road closure on Burnaby Mountain that has snarled traffic for weeks.

The good news is that the culvert replacement is nearing completion and limited traffic has started to run again on University Drive East – with two-lane traffic (one lane each direction) opening today.

University Drive East is one of only two main roads leading to the university and the UniverCity housing development. Having one road closed led to daily traffic jams on the north side of the campus.

The westbound lane of South Campus Road will remain open as an additional exit route off campus until work can resume to complete the balance piping for the Burnaby Mountain District Energy Utility Project
