The Giro di Burnaby, a criterium on the streets of Burnaby Heights, is the sixth of nine races in this year’s B.C. Superweek. It takes place on Thursday, July 11.

Commuting home is tough - even at the best of times.

Thursday afternoon and evening in North Burnaby will not be the best of times. This is a warning to avoid Heights area if you aren’t planning on to shop there or watch the annual Giro di Burnaby cycling races.

That’s because several streets will be closed to vehicle traffic and people parking in certain areas.

This professional bicycle race features top men and women cyclists from all over North America racing for over $15,000 in cash prizes on a fast and challenging course along Hastings and Albert Streets between Madison and MacDonald.

The following restrictions will apply:

  • Hastings Street (between Boundary and Willingdon) will be closed to all traffic between the hours of 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Thursday, July 11. Traffic travelling east and west along Hastings Street during these hours will be re-routed to Lougheed Highway.
  • Access for residents north of Hastings can only be made by going north bound on Boundary or Willingdon. The right-hand turn for west-bound traffic on Hastings at Willingdon will not be permitted.
  • Buses will be re-routed to Pender Street between Gamma and Boundary Road. There will be “No Stopping Any Time from 2-10pm” on both sides of Pender Street to accommodate the buses between Willingdon and Boundary Road.
  • Hastings Street will be cleared of all vehicles by 2 p.m. on the North side and 3 p.m. on the south side to allow race set up. Race start time is 5:30 p.m.
  • Any vehicles parked in areas that have restrictions prior to 2 p.m. will be ticketed and towed directly to Mundies towing company.
