It didn't take Burnaby cops much effort to corral drivers risking kids' lives

Back in the 1980s in B.C., a teenager only needed to turn 16 and pass written and road tests in order to get their driver’s licence.

There was no “L” and waiting a year until you could get your “N” and then waiting even longer until you got your licence.

Nope, under the old system teens who were woefully unprepared to drive were handed licences once they got through the road test.

I did on my first try. I then proceeded to crack up my mother’s car, an event she still hasn’t forgiven me for 34 years later.

My best friend failed his first test. He sped through a school zone and that was all she wrote.

But he was 16 and inexperienced.

What’s the excuse for 16 drivers who were nailed on Wednesday by Burnaby RCMP’s traffic section?

That’s how many speeding tickets were handed out while police were doing enforcement in Burnaby school zones.

That prompted the Burnaby RCMP to issue a reminder that school zones are in effect Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It’s ridiculous that the police have to remind people to slow down in school zones so they don’t hit and kill children, but here were are.

Oh, and one driver was also investigated for impaired driving so, yeah, don’t drink or be high and drive either.

Just stop doing all-around dumb things please.
