Opinion: $5 million Burnaby jackpot unclaimed after 13 days. I’m freaking out

I worry about a lot of things. I lay awake at night worrying about my elderly mom, my niece, my daughter and everyone else I care about.

Now I’m worrying about someone I don’t know.

It’s been 13 days since a ticket purchased in Burnaby nailed all the numbers for a $5 million 649 jackpot prize and nobody has stepped forward to claim it.

BC Lottery Corporation has even tweeted out that it’s waiting for the prize to be claimed, using a Cookie Monster gif to accentuate the point.

And so, I wait and worry that the ticket has been lost or tossed into a box, never to be found again.

I worry that someone will be forced to continue in a job they hate, to live in a home that’s ugly and cramped, to drive a vehicle that bleeds them dry in repair bills – all because they forgot about that ticket or lost it.

I shouldn’t really be worried. After all, people have a year to claim the prize. Some folks wait and get their affairs in order, including consulting a financial expert.

I couldn’t do that. I’d be terrified of something happening to the ticket in the meantime. What if your home got robbed? What if the kids spilled juice all over it and the numbers dissolved?

I’d rather claim the prize first and then do all the planning.

Please, for the love of dog, claim that ticket and put me out of my misery.
