Opinion: Burnaby absolutely right with ‘no drop-ins’ protocol

Reopening City of Burnaby recreation facilities is a tricky thing and not everyone will be happy.

No sooner had the NOW posted this story about how its recreation centres would be reopened that a couple of anonymous people emailed me complaining that there would be no “drop-ins” allowed.

“Not everyone can know when they will have time for exercise,” one person wrote. “This feels unfair.”

Oh, but it isn’t unfair. COVID-19 is unfair, but the city taking precautions is just prudent.

As facilities and programs gradually restart, they will operate with reduced capacity and focused programming to provide ample space for patrons to physically distance, said the city in a statement.

“Advance reservation is required for all programs and activities; and drop-ins will no longer be available,” said the city.

And not only that, but anyone who has a reservation should arrive 10 minutes early, dressed to participate in their activity with a pre-filled water bottle.

“Preventative measures and controls are in place and will continue to be used to minimize the risk related to the COVID-19 virus,” said the city. “Plexiglass and hand-sanitizer stations are being installed at customer service areas, as well as directional signage to assist with the flow of people throughout the facilities. Enhanced cleaning and sanitization protocols are in place.”

Hey, guess what? We’re still in the middle of a pandemic so while some areas of our society are reopening, they won’t reopen the way you’re used to so get over it.
