Opinion: Burnaby cops posted warning signs - 19 dummies didn’t notice

Burnaby drivers had enough warnings about a distracted driving blitz earlier this week. There was a big banner hanging over an overpass. Volunteers and officers were holding up giant signs. Officers were also standing at an intersection.

Burnaby drivers had enough warnings about a distracted driving blitz earlier this week.

There was a big banner hanging over an overpass.

Volunteers and officers were holding up giant signs.

Officers were also standing at an intersection.

That wasn’t enough as 19 drivers were nailed for distracted driving, including five commercial vehicles.

For this dangerous act of carelessness, each driver was ticketed – dinged for $368.

You get the irony, of course. If they hadn’t been looking at their phones or applying makeup or shaving - or whatever distracted drivers do instead of watching the road – their wallets wouldn’t be $368 lighter today.

Bad drivers often complain about my columns about speeding, saying the speed limits are too low and blah, blah, blah.

But I don’t know how anyone can complain about cracking down on distracted driving. If you’re not watching the road, you are a dangerous to yourself and everyone else out on the road – from pedestrians to cyclists to other drivers.

Pretty hard to argue about that. Of course, I’m sure some will try.
