Opinion: Burnaby strata forced a stranger into my home at a dangerous time

I’ve been involved with too many stratas in my lifetime for my liking … and my sanity.

They can be vicious snake pits run by titanic egos. And they can be places where smart management ideas go to die because some people think maintenance fees should remain the same every single year.

But I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite as reckless at what happened to me today thanks to the strata in charge of my building.

The strata decided that right during the COVID-19 pandemic – at a time when we’re being hit by a second wave of cases – was the perfect time to have strangers enter all of our units in order to do some plumbing work.

A notice went up recently saying that residents and tenants need to allow workers to enter our units so they could replace the garburators.

Yep, the garburators.

Not “we have an emergency and urgently need to fix it,” but we need to remove that machine that grinds up food waste because apparently we can’t possibly put this off until 2021.

So, I had to open up my home to a worker who started off wearing a mask, but then was spotted repeatedly pulling it down under his chin as he worked and as he wandered inside and outside our unit.

I can’t tell you how upset I am about this.

And it’s not like we had any choice. Previous notes about letting people into our unit have come with threats of fines if we don’t accommodate them.

The notice made no mention of COVID-19 or precautions that would be taken. Nor was any justification provided. I have no idea if these need removing because of some city ordinance, but at least address it and the precautions.

It’s just ridiculous that this was seen as a priority right now during a pandemic.

This at a time when provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry is warning people about gathering with FAMILY DURING THANKSGIVING!

"We have had to change our special celebrations and gatherings to keep the people we care about safe," she said in a recent statement. "This same approach is how we need to celebrate Thanksgiving this year. Rather than travelling to see friends or hosting a large family dinner, make it small this year and plan to connect virtually instead."

I wish they could do plumbing virtually.
