It’s not just Burnaby malls that have become ghost towns due to COVID-19.

Many of our roads are pretty close to seeing tumbleweeds roll through as people self-isolate and work from home.

Traffic has dropped dramatically all across our cities. Readers have been telling me that normal ratrunner routes are quiet because these drivers are just using the main routes.

“I finally feel it’s safe to cross the street in the morning,” wrote Steve L., from North Burnaby. “Nobody is whizzing by our narrow street.”

The problem is that with traffic flows dramatically lower, people are now driving like maniacs on our main roads, such as Hastings, Canada Way and Kingsway.

I’ve seen it on Hastings. It’s like the Indy 500, only without the safety precautions.

Drivers are definitely enjoying their newfound freedom a little too much. I’m sure it’s nice getting to work faster in the morning, or home at night, but we still have speed limits in place.

Drivers need to stick to them and follow the rules of the road.

It’s not time to re-create the Fast and Furious. Just once I’d like to an example in which people aren’t trying to take advantage of this health crisis.
