Opinion: Despicable people dumped all over Burnaby salmon habitat

Imagine you have decided to go out and enjoy some nature in Burnaby.

One of the best spots is along Byrne Creek in South Burnaby. There are trails, old trees and, of course, a tranquil creek to enjoy in an attempt to forget about COVID-19.

But when you arrive, you discover someone has dumped all over this little piece of nature in the big city.

Burnaby resident Paul Cipywnyk is a nature photographer and citizen who works to take care of Byrne Creek.

Cipywnyk posted on Twitter a photo of a whole bunch of garbage just dumped next to this salmon habitat.

“Jeez people why?” Cipywnyk tweeted out.

There’s furniture, construction waste, a mattress, toys for children and a baby car seat amongst the items dumped.

Dumping costs the City of Burnaby somewhere in the area of $150,000 each year to clean up. COVID-19 has meant fewer people out and about, which means fewer eyes to spot people dumping.

Dumpers are lazy and sleazy people who don’t give a damn about our parks and streams, just as long as they can unload their trash for free.

Just despicable behaviour.
