Opinion: I wish Burnaby could ban spitting during pandemic

Look, I get it, sometimes you have a mouth full of spit and you just want to get it out.

Look, I get it, sometimes you have a mouth full of spit and you just want to get it out.

But thanks to COVID-19, do we really need you spitting moistly out in public? Should you be spewing possibly infected droplets in public places?

That seems irresponsible, so swallow your pride and your mouth juices if you aren’t at home.

I was out on Sunday running an errand and witnessed a few egregious example. Two drivers spit out their windows while next to my vehicle. I had to shut my window while driving because I didn’t want someone else’s spit flying into my car.

Then while outside a mall, I spotted three different people spitting on the ground while near other people.

Spitting is disgusting at any time, but now it’s downright dangerous so let’s dial it back a bit.

I read a letter to the editor by a Richmond resident named Angela Gauld, saying that her city is right to crackdown on people violating social distancing.

And then she added this: “While on the subject of public hygiene, perhaps, if city council ever does get round to carrying out their threat, they might, at the same time, tackle the disgusting problem of people spitting in the streets. An education campaign, similar to the one admonishing us to wash our hands, is long overdue.”

It makes sense. Perhaps Burnaby could look at this. I know it would be tough to catch many people, but perhaps the act of banning spitting in the city would convince more people to keep it inside. Many cities have rules against spitting in public pools, maybe extend that to our public spaces.
