Opinion: It was pure madness at the Burnaby Costco. This is ridiculous

I used to enjoy my grandparents telling me stories about living through the Depression and the Second World War.

They laid out the tough times and how people just found ways to adjust to life when there was so little available.

Then I look at how people have acted during the past few weeks and I’m terrified at what’s happening to our society. Look, COVID-19 is indeed serious, but some people’s behaviour in reaction to the pandemic is downright sad.

It’s the hoarding. It’s so ridiculous to watch what happened at the Costco in Burnaby on Brighton Street. People have been lined up around the block trying to get into the Costco.

And for what? Stocking up for the apocalypse? Sure, some people are going to be spending more time at home so perhaps a few more food items are needed.

But hoarding toilet paper and other supplies? It’s insanity. I have seen no credible evidence that the supply chains in B.C. are breaking down in any way.

And why Costco? I went to my neighbourhood Nesters and they had everything I needed.

It feels like we’re a few steps away from re-creating the Road Warrior movies.

People should be more focused on washing their hands and taking care of others than if they have 500 rolls of toilet paper on hand.
