Opinion: Speed freak caught doing 80 km/h OVER the limit. Crush that car

I saw a comment on Twitter in relation to a monstrous example of speeding that put an idea in my head. It involves a new kind of punishment for extreme speeders.

I saw a comment on Twitter in relation to a monstrous example of speeding that put an idea in my head.

It involves a new kind of punishment for extreme speeders.

Police nailed a driver on Marine Drive doing – wait for it! – 134 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. That’s, let me calculate, 84 km/h OVER the posted speed limit.

Wow, just wow. Even on Highway 1, 134 km/h would get that terrible driver a speeding ticket.

But on a 50 km/h road that results in a $483 ticket and having their vehicle impounded for seven days.

Fines go up as the speed increases:

1-20 km/h over = $138

21-40 km/h over=$196

41-60 km/h over= $368

61 and over=$483

When the officer in question, Sgt. Mark Christensen of the VPD, posted this incident, someone tweeted back that for really extreme speeding cases, instead of towing the vehicle, they have a mobile car crusher on hand.

Imagine the kind of impact of having to watch your vehicle crushed into a neat-and-tidy little chunk of scrap metal.

Police could record it and then post the video. I think then speeders would get the message. Nobody would want to go through that.

It’ll never happen, of course, but it should. Driving 84 km/h over the limit should disqualify anyone from owning a vehicle.

Dare to dream.
