Opinion: They used his Burnaby lawn as a garbage can. And then the city responded

I’ve had to write too often about dumpers soiling Burnaby with their garbage. And it never feels like there’s anything positive that comes out of it. But then, this morning, I received some information from Burnaby resident Thomas Hasek.

I’ve had to write too often about dumpers soiling Burnaby with their garbage.

And it never feels like there’s anything positive that comes out of it. But then, this morning, I received some information from Burnaby resident Thomas Hasek.

On Saturday, a “vandal” dumped a pile of disgusting garbage on his lawn because they have no conscience.

I can’t imagine how awful that must feel to wake up on a sunny day and see something has violating your property like that.

Hasek was clearly not thrilled with what happened, but it turns out the City of Burnaby came to his rescue.

A call to the water pollution emergency line, on a weekend, no less, brought a city vehicle to investigate within an hour.

Shortly after, another city employee showed up and cleaned up the mess.

Now Hasek is expressing his deep appreciation to the city for what it did.

Thank you for the prompt cleanup after a vandal dumped garbage on the boulevard in front of my house on Saturday morning,” Hasek said in an email. “I would have cleaned it up myself, but it was about five times what my small garbage tote would hold, and it was getting lots of attention from crows … Well done.”

I wish city resources didn’t have to get used for stuff like this. It’s the price taxpayers pay for other people’s reprehensible behaviour.

But at least it got done. So, a happy ending.
