Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley isn’t known for his rousing speeches at public events.
He’s so humble he is the first person to tell you that.
But put a guitar in his hands and he will charm a crowd like the one on Thursday night at the Metrotown Hilton.
There, at the start of the annual Burnaby Board of Trade’s business awards, Hurley debut a song he wrote called Burnabarians – which could become the city’s anthem.
Burnaby Council wouldn’t adopt Burnabarian as Burnaby’s official demonym, but this is how @MayorofBurnaby Mike Hurley opened the @BurnabyBOT gala: with a song about Burnabarians!

Message received, Mayor Mike!
Just let us know where to send the free Burnabarians!#IAmBurnabarian https://t.co/3ZBJI1ArCb
Hurley mixed the catchy chorus with the usual event introductions – singing the names of event sponsors plus the territorial acknowledgement – and brought the crowd together.
The tune apparently has some roots in an old Irish song and the chorus is certainly catchy.
Hurley gave a shoutout to Ben Coli of Dageraad Brewing, who had previously ask council to officially adopt Burnabarian – the award-winning brewer even has a beer called Burnabarian.
So, without any more delay, watch the video of Hurley’s song here.
