Broken Pattullo from NDP

Dear Editor: I may finally have found something on which to agree with Mayor Derek Corrigan! He has just been quoted in The Vancouver Sun (July 24, 2013, p. A1-A2) telling a reporter that "If TransLink got left with a broken [Pattullo] bridge; we should take that up with the government."

But I do wonder if Mayor Corrigan realizes that it was the NDP government of the 1990s that "gifted" the bridge to TransLink without the funding to fix or replace it.

They also closed the Cascade Ward at Burnaby Hospital without first authorizing sufficient replacement seniors' care beds elsewhere in the hospital catchment area, setting the stage for the ongoing problems at that facility, too. Perhaps Mayor Corrigan will now agree with me when I write that the provincial NDP are incompetent when it comes to running the affairs of B.C. - whether it's regional transportation, health care, education, or taxation. This is why the voters of B.C. just denied them - yet again - the chance to govern.

And perhaps Burnaby voters will even agree with me that, we, the voters of Burnaby should take a closer look at council's record of incompetence and turf out this NDP farm-team in November 2014.

There is so much incompetence on display at Burnaby city hall: the huge cost over-run on lake dredging, the "bottomless" spending on computer systems, the "mindless" accumulation of civic reserve funds (now approaching $800 million) and the endless upward ratcheting of Burnaby's property tax rate to pay for all of this. It is time to elect a mayor and council who will spend our tax money as prudently as if it was truly their own.
