Dear Editor

Now, before some of your readers get hot and bothered about Mayor Corrigan’s declaration that he is prepared to get arrested to stop the proposed pipeline project, there are a three things that should be pointed out.

First, he said quite clearly that Burnaby would continue to pursue any and all legal means to halt the Kinder Morgan expansion. Secondly, he was willing to risk arrest as a last resort (i.e., if court action failed) even if meant the end of his political career. Thirdly, he stated this without any theatrics whatsoever.

In fact, the mayor’s address to the BROKE crowd was given in an low-keyed, almost conversational manner.  He didn’t try to play it up in any way other than what it was: a personal commitment by a community leader to not give up the struggle against a process designed to deny public opinion and silence public protest.

Quite frankly, we could use more like him.

Bill Brassington Sr., Burnaby
