Burnaby firefighters are heroes

Dear Editor, Burnaby is currently seeking nominations for their annual Heroes In the City awards.

Dear Editor,

Burnaby is currently seeking nominations for their annual Heroes In the City awards.

My nomination goes to those 18 brave Burnaby firefighters who are in Nepal seeking to make a difference in the recovery of victims from that devastating earthquake.

Members of Burnaby’s Technical Rescue and Task Force Team, they didn’t hesitate in saying “we’re going,” and were in the air and on their way to Nepal within 24 hours of hearing about the terrible event, days before many countries (including Canada) even decided to send their help.

Among the many accomplishments they performed was to help co-ordinate the rescue of four hikers stranded in a national park and an earlier rescue of a Canadian student and in general simply help survivors by distributing food and drink and supplies and work with search equipment.

The Burnaby team, put together three years ago, was seeing its first primary action in Nepal and many thanks go out to them, 18 firefighters who gave up their own time without pay to travel half way around the world to help people survive a world disaster.

How about as payment, 18 Heroes in the City medals?

Brian Pound, Burnaby
