Dear Editor:
The City of Burnaby's decision to create a linear park on the east side of Willingdon Avenue between Lougheed and Hastings Street raises a number of safety concerns.
The proposal includes a provision for a bicycle route and a pedestrian route. Given the conflict between bikers and pedestrians in areas, such as Stanley Park, one trusts that adequate safety measures are in place when the Willingdon linear park is built.
Further, and most importantly, ultra safety measures must be in place to ensure that pedestrians, especially children, do not fall foul to a traffic hazard along the highly occupied Willingdon Avenue. This may well require a barrier - such as a steel fence - to be installed, similar to the type erected at various Burnaby schools.
