City must save affordable rental housing

Dear Editor:

I'm pleased to see that the master plan for redeveloping the Brentwood and Lougheed Town Centres includes significant numbers of rental units in most of the towers being constructed. As we increase the density of our city, it is important to ensure that the stock of housing remains affordable for the people who already live in Burnaby, and that there remains a mix of housing options available for families of all kinds.

It's wonderful to see and read that both the city and the developer believe that affordable rental housing are considered good, strong investments that will help create a complete community. It remains to be seen just how many units will be made available as rental stock once construction has been completed, but these are encouraging first steps.

I hope that in moving forward, both the city and Shape Properties continue to stand by their strong support for ensuring that rental stock in the city of Burnaby remains high, and that these rental stocks remain available for those who need them most.
