Dear Editor:
Re: Local scientists fight 'alarming' laws, Burnaby NOW, July 20.
I was heartened and proud to see scientists from my alma mater, SFU, speaking up against the Conservative Harper government.
The university has a history of allowing and encouraging its students to speak back to power. These environmental scientists do us all proud.
The twisting of evidence by the government needs to be exposed, and this talented and brave three are the perfect ones to do it.
Most troubling is the government cutbacks to funding that thus makes collecting evidence harder.
These cutbacks, coupled with the increasing pressure on scientists (and often politicians) to remain silent in the face of incorrect data and shoddy policy, create a perfect storm which allows the government to lie to the public.
The omnibus bill was a dangerous bill, and it will take some time for us to fully comprehend. We, the general public, count on "experts" in their fields to alert us when things have gone amiss.
Thank you to Favaro, Cote and Reynolds for being the voices we need to hear regarding our environment and fish habitat.
