Help Syrian refugees

Dear Editor: Re: City NDP MPs call for debate, more aid for Syrians, Burnaby NOW, Sept. 6. I am ecstatic to say, that for the first time in my life, I agree with both NDP MPs Peter Julian and Kennedy Stewart regarding Canadian humanitarian efforts through immigration initiatives.

Also, I have no doubt whatsoever that they would agree with me that those in most imminent danger should be first in line for that assistance. It is obvious, too, that Syrian Christians fulfil that mandate.

Despite some serious character and moral flaws on the part of sitting President Bashar al-Assad, it is generally agreed that he has done more to protect non-Muslim minorities (i.e. Jews and Christians - the latter consisting of some three million souls), many of whom have already fled to camps situated on or near neighbouring states.

Assad himself is a member of the Alawite sect of Islam, itself a minority to Sunni and Shia sects.

Canada, being still a largely Christian country (despite the reluctance of many to admit such "impolite" truths), they should fit into our system quite jauntily.
