Jane Shin misrepresented herself in previous interview

Dear Editor:

I would like to draw the attention of Burnaby NOW readers to some very revealing statements made by Jane Shin more than a month ago, on April 25, while she was being interviewed by Global B.C.'s Squire Barnes on BC 1, Global's 24-hour B.C. news channel.

After recalling this interview, I went online and watched it again. I was shocked by what I saw and heard: Shin clearly misrepresents herself in this interview and misleads Barnes and the viewing audience about her medical practitioner status in B.C.

The thrust and tone of Squire Barnes' questions to Jane Shin clearly indicate he was under the impression Shin is a practicing physician here in B.C. But not once during the interview did Shin make any serious effort to clarify the nature of her medical status in B.C., despite repeated references by Squire Barnes to her being a doctor in B.C.

In fact, in one section of the interview, Shin states she has "frontline" experience with the clear implication being she has "frontline" medical experience here in B.C. This is simply untrue and grossly misleading.

I am disgusted by the clear attempt on the part of Shin to knowingly pass herself off as a practicing "frontline" physician here in B.C. when she is not.

Barnes even suggests at one point in the interview that Shin may have to provide him with medical assistance during the interview if something were to go wrong with him medically. Yet Shin made no attempt to set Barnes or the record straight.

I am very concerned - and I think your readers will agree - that what Jane Shin says, and allows to be portrayed, in this April 25 interview is not at all consistent with her current claim that she never intended to misrepresent herself as a practicing physician in B.C. Anyone viewing and listening to the interview would have to conclude Shin is, indeed, a practicing "frontline" medical doctor in B.C.

If she were being honest, Shin should have clarified immediately with Squire Barnes that although she has a medical degree (from the Caribbean) she is not, in fact, a practicing physician here in B.C., nor licensed to practice in B.C., and has never practiced medicine in this province.

However, Shin allowed each opportunity to clarify this question pass without even flinching, which is shockingly inconsistent with her current explanation based on unintended errors and miscommunications.
