Letter: After years of 'unbearable noise' I want this Burnaby project stopped

Not everyone is happy the Broadway road project will continue

Editor:

I was bemused by your article: ‘We won’: Burnaby residents celebrate as city reverses ‘ridiculous’ delay to project, NOW News.

I am an affected resident of Broadway Street. I am not celebrating. The city's public meeting was curious. It was billed as an "information meeting," but little information was given.

It was not advertised as a "decision-making meeting." Yet, 30 minutes into the meeting, the city representative, like a medium at a seance, stated that he "sensed" that residents wanted the project to continue. Most of the feedback was from one person (I did not get his name) who repeated that he wanted continuation. No poll was done of residents at the meeting or those who could not make it to the meeting, yet somehow a decision was made.

After three years of the unbearable noise of digging, grinding and constant backup alarms, as well as coughing from the dust clouds - my family is sick of it all. Although I strongly support the project goals, I have lost faith in the city's ability, and the contractor's commitment, to continue in an acceptable and timely manner.

My vote, if it was asked for, would be to delay the project until the city and contractor can demonstrate that everything is being done to minimize this project's damaging impact on residents.
