Re: Half of checked trucks failed inspection, NOW News, March 5.
A few years ago, as I stopped at the traffic signal at the intersection of Marine Way and Boundary on the way to the airport, I was startled to see that a five-ton stake truck, hauling a wheel-excavator on a trailer, had mounted the traffic signal island of the right-turn lane.
I wondered if the truck driver was untrained for handling this truck-and-trailer combination.
I wondered if the truck driver had forgotten to connect the trailer's brake lines to the truck.
I wondered if the truck and trailer were mechanically deficient with worn brakes or bald tires.
I was pleased to read that 14 law-enforcement agencies across the Lower Mainland will be stepping up commercial vehicle inspections in order to prevent this type of "near-miss" incident.
