An open letter to Burnaby North-Seymour MP Terry Beech:
You came to my door during the last election campaign. We spoke for 15 minutes and I found you both articulate and thoughtful.
I expressed some concerns about the leader of your party. Your reply was “You’re voting for me, not him.”
I found this a reasonable reply, complete with an implication of intestinal fortitude on your part.
Currently, we find ourselves at several crossroads, individually and collectively.
The crossroad of immediate importance is the Monday vote on this act.
I have the luxury of being an armchair expert with a bird’s eye view from centre ice. I know, without hesitation, exactly how I would vote in your position, since I am not in your position.
You have the responsibility to vote as you see fit, having access to more facts and knowledge of the situation than others.
Before you cast your vote, considering the following:
1. This vote will define the future of our nation for generations to come.
2. Is the situation of a significant and grave enough nature to require such a sledgehammer?
3. Will this sledgehammer continue to reappear, time and time again, for lesser and lesser situations?
4. How each MP votes on this matter will be remembered by posterity.
No matter which way you vote, history has a way of being a capricious and arbitrary judge.
Then again you took the job, as well as the responsibility.
Stephen Meighan, Burnaby
