Letter: Burnaby 'parking wars' wouldn't be so bad if landlords followed the rules

I have read the series of articles regarding the battles over parking, especially concerning renters.

I believe the responsibility lies on the landlords, not the renters.

We all know that the price of a detached house in Burnaby is sky high so it is no surprise that homeowners, especially buyers who has bought in recent years, are looking for mortgage helpers.

However, the landlords need to follow the rules for secondary suites laid out by the city. Specifically, the city has rules for parking: An additional off-street parking space will be required for the suite. This must not restrict access to other parking spaces.

Number of Suites: Each single-family home can have one secondary suite or in-law suite, but not both.

In my opinion, the city needs to do more to enforce that rules that are already in place for homeowners who have secondary suites.

I feel really bad for the renters, who absolutely have the right to park on the street, but are subjected to the ire of unreasonable neighbours. They also have the right to have an off-street spot but many landlords are forcing them onto the street like second-class citizens.
