Editor:
Since July 1, the provincial government lifted the provincial health order for most sporting and gymnasium facilities.
Indoor high- and low-intensity group exercises are now allowed with no restrictions. With this in mind, I called Bonsor Recreation Centre on July 5, hoping to see what their racquet sports schedules are.
Imagine my surprise when I was told that nothing has been planned and that the whole recreation centre was still under COVID-19 restrictions on indoor exercise and sports activities.
When I quizzed the front desk, the lady who took my call indicated no word had come down from city hall to change anything at all.
Apparently, all the other recreation centres are also not opened for the full range of pre-pandemic activities.
Are you kidding me?
Did this lifting of the PHO on July 1 come as a sudden surprise to city hall? If so, they must be the only ones in B.C.
Did they not have months to plan for this day when the restrictions would be lifted? It’s been five days already and the staff at Bonsor have no idea when activities will be reinstated. In the meantime, taxpayers of Burnaby have to wait indefinitely on top of the more than one-year COVID restrictions, for the re-opening of their recreation centres.
It’s not rocket science. There was ample warning and signs that the lifting of the restrictions was going to happen. And yet no reactivation plan appears to have been put in place. I hope the city council will do something about this lack of action.
