Editor:

I am an angry man writing about the treatment of women in our society.

Specifically, the gross manhandling of women who are walking around our community. I have two female friends who live in the Metrotown area who have shared stories about the harassment they have endured in the most crowded part of our city.

First, both of these young women have been catcalled and followed by men who are flirting with them even though it’s clear they don’t want to speak to them. Sometimes this goes on for blocks as these guys say “talk to me baby” and think it’s cute and funny. As I said, this is harassment and needs to stop. You are not endearing, you are scary to them so cut it out.

Second is men who take advantage of crowds like those in and around the Metrotown SkyTrain station, including the crosswalk, Big crowds gather after trains drop people off and there are disgusting men who “accidentally” bump into women and touch them in inappropriate places and then feign innocence.

Again, these perverts think it’s funny. It’s gotten to the point where my friends are looking at moving away to quieter parts of our community so they feel safe.

I’m ashamed at this behaviour and hoping that people will read this letter and be a part of the solution. Speak out if you see this behaviour.

T. Johnson, Burnaby
