Re: Maskless maniac berated me in a Burnaby mall, NOW Opinion
I read a letter recently in the NOW about a local woman getting yelled at for simply walking away from another person who was violating the mask mandate in a store.
I had a similar experience when I was Christmas shopping at Lougheed Town Centre. I was hungry and so I went to their excellent food court for some Persian food. This was while Omicron was on the rise and people were feeling really vulnerable.
I saw some young men in the food court and they weren’t wearing their masks. They were standing in line and laughing and it really bothered me to see people putting others at risk.
And so I said something. I politely got their attention and pointed at my mask. I figured they had maybe just forgotten but the look on their faces told me that it was deliberate. One of them gave me the finger and so I went back to eating.
I later noticed that these young men were staring – actually glaring – at me while I ate and I felt very unsafe.
When I got up to leave, these crazed dudes decided to stalk me around the mall. One muttered that I should “take off that diaper” on my face.
Luckily, one of the mall security staff was walking by and he helped me. These cowards took off when I talked to security.
I still see people ignoring the mask rule. It’s frustrating. We’re all making sacrifices in big ways. Wearing a mask however is just a small inconvenience.
