Letter: Gondola to SFU planned on wrong side of Burnaby Mountain

Writer wants gondola on north side of mountain to attract Tri-Cities residents

Editor:

I agree that SFU should have a gondola on Burnaby Mountain.

It's the route and cost which I see as the major problem. The current plan needs to travel far too great a distance from the south side of the mountain.

Rather, if they took the old cement company's lot on the north face and went up from that point, it’s a short, steep direct line that drops off to the library. Another option is the Port Moody works yard currently not yet developed.

Regardless, north side ridership would be easily ten-fold over the same window of time due to decrease in travel distance. Port Moody is currently looking at a new station by the old Andres Wine location, so a short tram using the existing lines of rail is a cheap and cost-effective solution. The last point is it doesn’t interfere with so many property owners and residents, as is the objection to the current model. Time for a rethink.
