Letter: I'm paying for my Burnaby NOW. It's worth it

Local news matters

Editor:

For the first time in my 33 years, I am paying to support an otherwise free source of information, and I encourage my fellow residents of Burnaby to do the same if they are able.

Local coverage is how many people obtain the news that is relevant and specific to their own needs and to their surroundings.

Regional giants like the Sun and the Province devote precious few articles to matters that affect local Burnaby residents first. From construction projects, council politics, and budget debates to sports (Go Lakers and SFU Ice Hockey!), park closures, and fun things to do in town, the Burnaby Now offers readers full exposure and plenty of notice to attend these events. Local job postings are also a major asset to the community.

The Burnaby Now (and its sister newspapers) do not require their readers to pay in order to access a paywall, something that is increasing rare during our time. They could have made the switch, and still can, but keeping their coverage free is nothing short of a public service.

For these reasons, and for a sense of pride in my adoptive home, I am pleased and proud to support our local newspaper with my financial support. If you can, I encourage you to do the same.

Robin Wong, Burnaby
