Letter: My son ended up in a Burnaby dump when the landlord pulled a bait-and-switch

A Burnaby renter didn't get the unit he thought he was renting.

Sending my son off to school on the other side of the country wasn’t an easy decision, but he had landed a spot at his dream school and so we did our best to help him.

He’s a little stubborn so he wanted to do things himself. He stayed with a buddy last summer in Burnaby while he looked for a place to live. He thought he had found a half-decent place in the Edmonds area in an old house that had several suites in it.

My son felt lucky when the landlord told him that he had a “good feeling” about him and so he had “beaten out” a lot of other applicants.

But when it came time to move in, the landlord told him the unit he had looked at had already been rented out. Instead, my son was taken to an unfinished basement that had been converted into crude units that I would not want my dog to live in.

My son didn’t have any other choice so he’s been living there. He was basically told to take it or leave it. With no place to go, he decided to take it. He says it’s not as horrible as I think, but he is planning on moving when his next term ends.

I’m pretty angry about this. I guess this is a life lesson about looking at the fine print on a lease agreement.

Is this how people in Burnaby normally act?
