Letter: ‘Silly’ Burnaby drivers just can’t seem to figure out how roundabouts work

Should the City of Burnaby be adding more of these around town?

Roundabouts, a bird's eye view.

Editor:

I am a cyclist who pedals his way around Burnaby often and while the city is doing a decent job of catching up on adding more bike infrastructure, it is behind on one traffic innovation: roundabouts.

I think the city needs to add more of these at some key intersections because of the way they force drivers to use their brains. As far as I’ve seen, they save lives because they cut down on drivers being T-boned by other drivers.

I know these roundabouts take up more space and aren’t easy to add to existing areas, they are smart planning.

I like to ride up Burnaby Mountain and there are a couple of roundabouts that have been well-placed by the city. These roundabouts keep traffic flowing and reduce the chances of serious accidents.

The worst that can happen is someone getting sideswiped.

The problem is that there are too many drivers in Burnaby who just don’t understand how to use a roundabout. Drivers do have to slow down and wait if another vehicle is already part way through the lane from your left. Just be patient and wait for that driver. Then, you can proceed.

Some of these silly drivers just go barrelling into the lane and misjudge the oncoming vehicle. If you just slow down a little, you’ll have no problem at all.

This isn’t rocket science, just common sense.
