Letter: Theft of Ukrainian flag is shocking

Hard to fathom motives of culprit, who had to go to some trouble to remove resident's banner from front porch

The theft of a Ukrainian flag from her front porch has dismayed a reader in Burnaby.

Editor:

My Ukrainian flag was stolen from my front porch in May 2022. I only had it for two weeks.

In April 2022 I ordered the flag through Walmart online, then picked it up when notified it was in. When I got it home I attached it to the vertical wrought iron frame on my front porch. I used two sets of locking hooks so it would be secure, since the wind blows quite strongly on my street.

Two weeks later it was gone. I stepped out on the porch and looked around and it was nowhere to be seen.

The culprit had to come up eight stairs to reach it. The sensor light comes on at night. He/she had to undo the double hooks, and got the lower hook undone. They could not unhook the top one, so obviously cut off the top corner, and ran off with my flag. All I have left is the double hook with the grommet and corner of the flag where it was cut off, still attached to the wrought iron. I find this quite outrageous, and I ask myself why anyone would do this. Do we have enemies of Ukraine here in north Burnaby? Or did they want a Ukrainian flag so badly they would damage it and steal it? It's beyond me.

I reported this incident to Burnaby RCMP and got a case number, but it is low priority compared to other issues going on in the city.

In the meantime, my flag is out there with the top left corner missing. I would like to get it back if anyone comes across it.
