Letter: 'Vitally important' wetlands need Burnaby's protection

Wetlands provide habitat and serve as natural carbon-capture areas, this writer says.

This photo shows some of the trails at Fraser River Foreshore Park. Many Burnaby residents are upset at a city plan to locate an organic waste facility on land at the east end of the park.

Editor:

I am opposed to the location of the compost facility in a protected wetland area.

As many of us know, the wetlands are vital to maintain the biodiversity of the Lower Mainland. It provides habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna. Also, wetlands are natural carbon capture areas.

As a Burnaby citizen who walks the paths of Foreshore Park, including the wetlands, I cannot see anywhere in Foreshore Park that can replicate this area. Burnaby staff does not say what wetlands will be restored, but if it is within the Burnaby park system, this does nothing to protect the vitally important wetlands which continue to be lost to development in the Metro Vancouver area. It will only restore small areas of wetlands, probably not along the Fraser River.
