Editor:
The reckless acts on Burnaby’s roads continue and put us all in harm’s way.
Weeks ago, I wrote to the B.C. Ministry of Transportation to warn about the speeding risks coming with empty roads. I received a polite response, but no action.
With COVID-19, the province has the urgent authority to alter highway operations and penalties.
How about issuing an emergency order to provide the RCMP and local police agencies the ability to impound vehicles for longer and temporarily suspend driver licences for reckless acts with a much-lower threshold.
Please remember, crashes on the roads caused by reckless driving are not accidents; this represents purposeful foul play against all of us at a time we need to keep the medical system load to a minimum.
And putting an innocent bystander in the hospital puts them at gross risk of contagion infection, plus this exposes health-care workers to unnecessary risks from uncontrolled entry of possibly infected persons into the care system.
Stop the reckless driving, and heavily penalize those amongst us who act in such selfish ways.
